Time expectations for car key programming by key type — from a 15-minute transponder job to a 90-minute smart key pairing on a premium vehicle.
Transponder Key: 15–30 minutes
Connecting to the OBD port, reading the vehicle's immobiliser data, and writing the new chip. Straightforward on most common vehicles.
Remote Fob Programming: 20–40 minutes
In addition to transponder programming, the remote's ID must be coded to the BCM. Some vehicles also need a synchronisation procedure.
Smart Key Programming: 45–90 minutes
Multiple modules to programme: immobiliser chip, comfort access antenna, push-start system. Premium vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) often require additional security-access protocols.
All Keys Lost: 60–120 minutes
When there is no working reference key, the technician must use advanced IMMO reading tools to extract the vehicle's key data first. Takes longer but is fully achievable on-site.
