Do These Things Immediately
Remove the key from water immediately. Take out the battery to prevent short-circuit damage to the circuit board. Do not press any buttons. Do not put it in rice — this is a myth that does more harm than good as rice particles can damage the circuitry. Pat the outside dry and leave it open in a warm, dry area.
What Happens Inside a Wet Smart Key
Smart keys contain a circuit board, transponder chip, antenna coil, and battery. Water causes short circuits and over time leads to corrosion. The transponder chip is usually the most resilient component — even if the electronics fail, the chip may survive, which can reduce replacement costs.
Professional Inspection and Repair
Key 2 BHP can inspect your water-damaged smart key, clean and test the circuit board, and advise whether repair or replacement is more cost-effective. We carry replacement key blanks and can programme a new smart key on-site if replacement is the better option.
